Giving Thanks

We had a fabulous Thanksgivng! Nuriel and I got up early on Wednesday to do some grocery shopping.

The weather was beautiful. Crisp, sunny autumnal air. I opened the kitchen door to the back  porch where Nuriel played while I was getting things ready in the kitchen.  We had a lot of baking to do!

At one point she decided that she, too, must wear her apron!

 We baked four apple custard pies and a caramelized pear upside down cake. {No, we didn't eat all the pies!}

We chopped and ate apples while working in the kitchen. It was a lot  of fun to bake with my boys!

The pies looked great and tasted yummy!

On Thursday we headed to Gloucester where we had been invited to a friend's house. Once we made it through the crazy traffic on 64 East, it was a beautiful drive down the Colonial Parkway.

Nuriel fell in love with the swing in the backyard by the marina.

 Nunu and the moon.

I (1) dislike Black Friday sales as I strive to support "local" rather than "big," and (2) I dislike clothing with writing on it. Thus this shirt was the perfect thing to purchase at a Black Friday sale Noah and Nathan wanted  to go to. Ha.

This is what I have been working on for a handmade toys holidays exchange. What a fabulous idea! We all craft three of something, then exchange the goodies over wine. :-) I wonder what Nuriel will end up with...

A Little Catchin' Up...

Nuriel watching Noah's football game.

Some talented pumpkin carving (not ours!)

Nuriel at a little "We are teachers and Hurricane Sandy is giving us a day off. Yay!" get-together.

What can I say? I love colors!

One chip is all you get...

The Scary Part About Halloween

No, it wasn't the masks or costumes.

I took Nuriel trick-or-treating to our old neighborhood. Noah and Nathan both chose to stay at home, so it was just us two. Nuriel was dressed as a Koru (Picture coming soon...). Once she figured out that people were putting candy into her little felted pumpkin baggie, she walked from house to house with springy step and I was very proud of her trick-or-treating manners.

As she is entering these memorable times of childhood, I can feel that looming question, "Where is my Daddy" come closer and closer and I'm terrified. She has been imitating a boy she goes to childcare with and says, "My Daddy is at work." I must admit I had to gulp the first time she said it.

As I was making my way through the neighborhood yesterday, there were so many Dads out with their children and I awakened to a different pain. The pain of knowing my precious daughter will never have a moment like THAT...

And that was the scariest part about Halloween...

Nuriel in September

September it is. Nuriel turned two. "Happy Herpe" is her way of saying that. (It sounds a bit like Happy Herpes when she says it.)

Nuriel's birthday table. The wooden mushrooms were the "party favors." I bought her the book "The Keeping Quilt" and we asked guests to bring a scrap of fabric in lieu of a gift. I don't have a birthday ring for Nuriel. I bought her an owl candle holder last year and simply added a mushroom one this year. The big candle is from the Blessingway.

She was very shy about blowing out her birthday candles.

Putting these up was a must!

Nuriel in her kitchen wearing a sweet lil'apron that was a gift from far away.

The fabrics for the quilt I will sew... Well, I wonder when...

We had a simple brunch with some fruit salad, a potato-egg breakfast bake, blueberry cake, smoked salmon on ciabatta, cucumber sandwiches, lemonade & coffee.

Nuriel yesterday on her way to "school."

 Socks in progress... and...

finished! So much warmth & softness. Thank you for the gift of yarn my dear friend. :-)

What can I say? School has started and things are crazy busy.

Love Thy Neighbor (Long & Pictureless)

I don’t own a dryer. My laundry room is set up in such a way that it would only accommodate a stackable unit and purchasing one is not on my priority list. There’s a Laundromat just a block away from us. If laundry piles up, I do a couple of loads and then take them there to dry.

One of the people working there is a lovely middle-aged lady. I’m pretty sure the place pays minimum wage or just a little more, but the people who work there provide a wonderful, clean facility. The lady takes the bus to and from work and you just get the sense that she lives on very little. I really enjoy her outgoing, friendly personality and we usually end up chatting for a few minutes when I go there.

It’s been hot. Almost too hot to cook, but my boys longed for a hearty meal. We made a yummy homemade pasta sauce along with some yummy pasta. Everything was ready. I had to run to get the laundry from the Laundromat before dinner and for some odd reason I decided to take the lady at the Laundromat some of it.

Her face lit up when I handed her what we had prepared. She told me how she had really needed some dinner tonight and sang praises to the Lord. She immediately had a taste and then complimented our cooking. I left feeling happy that I had brought her some joy with something so simple.

As I pulled into our street parking spot, a truck pulled up next to me. The guy signaled for me to roll down my window. The guy lives a few houses up the street and I wondered what was going on.

There are a few houses in our neighborhood that need to be “flipped.” One of those is an old Sanatorium behind my house. The guy was telling me that he had taken on keeping watch over it a bit and asked me to let him know if someone dumps trash back there. I don’t live in the best neighborhood, but the neighborhood association is trying to make a difference, which is nice. He’s part of that.

I told him that I would. I apologized to him for the state of my own backyard. He asked me what was wrong with it.

I love my house and I hate my house. The idea of gardening is very appealing, but how to add that activity to everything else has yet to be determined. The grass in my backyard is usually a disaster and some bushes need trimming. We don’t own a lawnmower. I’ve priced new ones – Way too expensive! I’ve looked into getting a used one as well, but it’s just never worked out. We have one of those environmentally friendly push-mowers, but once the grass gets too high, it needs mowing with a gas-powered monster mower.

Anyhow.

He told me that he was about to cut the grass in the vacant lot next to my house and that he’d be happy to take care of my backyard if I opened the gate for him. I was stunned and oh so happy! After he cut the grass, he told me that my boys could come to his house any time to borrow a lawnmower and weed-eater. To top it all off, he got his chain-saw, cut down the two overgrown “tree-sized bushes” in the backyard and offered to take it all to the dump for me, too! All under the slogan, “Neighbors have to look out for each other.”

My backyard looks amazing now.

This little nice thing I did surely came back to me in a much bigger way!

I think I’m going to take the lady at the Laundromat some cake tomorrow…

The Week In Pictures (Ehmmm... I Guess Not!)

This picture could serve as a symbol for the events of the week. It just fell over on the counter and broke in half - seemingly out of nowhere. How strange. (The plate’s story is here.) It’s been a strange week indeed, but I want to (mostly) focus on the positive aspects...

Then, as I just tried to upload pictures from a disk as the camera-laptop cord is torn, I realized that the newest ten pictures weren't transferred. I suppose the spirit of the week continues... I can't wait for it to be over.

Without going into a long rant: I can have a lot of empathy for people in a bad situation, but it's fair to say that all compassion ceases when people who don't even know me paint the picture of a moral-less human being and besmirch the character of those who can no longer speak for themselves.

That being said. On to the good times...

A few months ago a New Zealand inspired eatery opened up in town. It’s called Burger Bach. They serve burgers made with New Zealand grass-fed beef and lamb. We hardly ever eat out, but Noah and Nathan had earned some money this summer and wanted to treat me to dinner there. Of course, I wasn’t going to stop them. It was lovely. Noah and I had a delicious “North Island” lamb burger with Tzatziki sauce. Nathan decided to have a “Kiwi Chick,” although he wished the burger had a more “manly” name. I enjoyed my glass of NZ wine as well.

We sat outside. It was a perfect spot for Nuriel as I was able to “corner her in,” so I didn’t have a runaway toddler to deal with. Nuriel is wearing a head-kerchief I made for her using some yarn I had left over from making…

… a shawl for Viv, which is a Traveling Woman in a Malabrigo Sock. Thank you for your patience, Viv. Sometimes I think it would be so lovely if all my favorite blogging people lived in one village rather than spread out across the globe. Alas.

I want to knit more again. I have a Hine on the needles that will be a gift for a lovely family who just welcomed a baby girl. Nuriel will be two in less than a month! She’s started using the potty at home. Her vocabulary is increasing. I can understand her, but it can be hard for others. I’m a bit worried about that, but hopefully it will remedy itself.

She still loves playing in her lil’ kitchen...

Noah and Nathan no longer like it when I post pictures of them or share their adventures. I feel like I need to say that now and then. I would hate for people to get the impression that I only blog about the girl. As we still don't have internet at home, they have been fabulous about watching Nuriel while I step out for a bit to use the internet-service at the library.

Vandalized!

I always knew we didn't live in the safest neighborhood in town, but I thought the alarm system, the pitbulls and a dose of common sense would protect us.

I was wrong!

I'm still in disbelief. My most valauble possession has been vandalized!

I still don't know when the intruders descended upon my property or how they made their way in, but apparently they invaded my sacred four walls and caused havoc in my bedroom (of all places) where they found my most precious possession. They didn't take it, no! They just destroyed it.

I'm quite freaked out by the incident. I wake up at night, shaken by nightmares. I might need to see a shrink. I'm considering the purchase of a semi-automatic weapon for future protection. (Don't tell me I'm over-reacting! Read the whole story first.)

My precious collection included unique pieces from Iceland, Peru and New Zealand. They've all been destroyed. I had some "lesser valued" items on my dresser top. They didn't bother messing with those! Suckers!

And the most outrageous part is that they had sex in my bedroom! They reproduced and created cozy little beds for their offspring... in... my... stash... of... yarn!

Yes.

Wool moths descended upon a storage box in my bedroom. My stash is history. [Sobbing.]
