Virginia State Fair, Here We Come!

I've never been to a State Fair! Isn't that somethin'? Then this year we decided to submit some things to the Virginia State Fair Arts & Crafts Competition. It seemed like something fun to do. It was 20 cents per entry. That made it something cheap to do. Never in my wildest imagination did I think we would win one of those prestigious ribbons! But guess what? We did! Noah submitted his pentatonic cherry lyre, Nathan a carved wooden spoon & I submitted four knittsie creations. That's six entries & we won FOUR ribbons! Noah got a blue ribbon (1st place) for his lyre, Nathan a white ribbon (3rd place) for his wooden spoon & I got a blue ribbon for this and a red ribbon (2nd place) for this. The weather has been coldish-rainish. It's supposed to be a bit better on Friday. I've decided to pick the kids up from school early & we're goin' to the State Fair! I promise I'll snap lots of pictures! (Either this is something to really be excited about or just a sign of me getting old. I haven't figured that out yet!)

WIP Wednesday

A quick post while my daughter is taking a nap & I'm anxiously, with chattering teeth, awaiting the estimate of the car repair guy... It may not be Wednesday here, but it's Wednesday somewhere in the world. Good enough for me!

So many WIPs. In the left bottom corner three skeins of Malabrigo Silky Merino waiting to become pilot hats. The two green skeins on the top left are Madelinetosh skeins a friend gifted me with for Nuri's birth. I'm planning on making her one of these. The white lil' something on the top is the beginning of a lace bonnet. The big green thing is an almost completed Icarus shawl. And then some sheep waiting to be stitched up there on the right... Truth be told, I haven't had much time to knit. I've been busy counting my blessings and looking at this:

The blanket was a gift from Christine over at a simple quilter. I thought it was too cute when I noticed that finger poking out through one of the holes yesterday. Yes, she sleeps best all swaddled up like that.

And while I'm counting my blessings, I also miss him more than ever. Oh, all the smiles this child would have brought to his face. And I'm also a bit annoyed with the stigma attached to not having a father listed on the birth certificate; no way to dip into her Kiwi heritage with a passport one day. My child, the child of a New Zealander & a German is officially an American citizen. Just slightly strange...

Nuriel's Birth Story

Nuriel's birth story is available for reading here. There are also some pictures. Enjoy! Birth Stories is an awesome blog. You might want to start following it! I feel honored that Nuriel's story is posted there.

Sunday

I haven't been totally lazy, but I'm going to torture you with another post of "just" pictures of my precious children. I did manage to type up the birth story tonight & I will give you the direct link to where it can be found as soon as it's published at Birth Stories.

Here's Nathan trying to look strange in an effort to conceal how much he loves his lil' sister. Pssst. Don't tell him I said that! Caught a nice Nuri-smile there. She's a smiley girl!

Nuri loves this spot by the window, especially in the mornings with the sun shining in. In the background you can see a bit of the gorgeous quilt Viv over at Highway Cottage made for Nuriel. Thank you so, so much, Viv! It's such a Kiwi treasure! My daughter is a projectile pooper, though. - I'm gonna blame this on her Papa, because I can! - I promise a better picture of the quilt very soon. It had to be washed. Turns out my daughter prefers to projectile poop on clean linen and heirloom quilts... or my hand if neither of these are available!

Things should be back to normal soon - right?! Maybe not. Oh, but I'm really trying! Pinky promise.

Thursday Already, Huh?!

Well, how about some randomness? Time flies when your boobs are engorged (Why couldn't he live to see me with some real nice big boobs?!?!) & you have a baby to look at & people bring you food. I'm getting some knitting done, though. Seriously! I'll have a completed project one of these days... By the way... I'm not neglecting my boys by not posting pictures of them. They really don't like being featured on the blog much. Thank goodness for babies who don't protest! :-) In other good news... I received a letter from Brent's daughter in the mail today. Exciting! So glad to know she received the box...

These Days

I haven't forgotten about this blog. Nuriel is easy-going. Her nighttime routine is sleep from 10 p.m.-ish to 6 a.m.-ish with a quick nurse & back to snooze around 2 a.m. I had a bit of a baby blue day the other night. She wasn't happy with the lil' milk my boobs were giving her. So she nursed & screamed & I cried  while telling her "Papa stories." After that we were all better. :-)

I was not looking forward to her first appointment with the pediatrician today. Home-birthers & non-vaccinaters (or vaccinaters on a delayed schedule) are usually frowned upon. I tend to get impatient in these situations & I had asked Brent for help from spiritual realms. Boy, did I feel his presence! I love the pediatrician I went to see. Very positive towards home-births; the vaccination issue didn't even come up. She was totally excited that I was breastfeeding Nuriel so easily & successfully. She's already gained 5 ozs.! She even had someone do that state-mandated test for 29 metabolic diseases while I was feeding her, which made it as pleasant as such a poke can be for a 6-days-old.

I'm enjoying Nuriel & Noah & Nathan & just getting into the new flow of things.

I'll be back soon with a blog post. I'm designing a fern lace bonnet for my girl & I'm looking forward to sharing the pattern.

Much love to all of you. All the comments really warm my heart!

More Moi Girl

Three days old.
Every girl needs a dress... and handknit socks.
She's such a wonderful, easy-going baby.
She's got the lil' brother wrapped around her finger already.
(He would probably deny that.)
The big brother's strategy seems to be:
Avoid being around your nursing mother at any cost!
Life is slow & simple & good right now.
I feel so blessed.

My Daughter

I can't stop looking at her; can't stop watching her delicate yet jerky movements that remind me so of her father's gestures. It's not that I would have been less happy with a boy - no not at all. It's that surprise factor that still makes me smile. It's like the spiritual world having given me a big hug after a few very tough months. A healthy baby. So much joy. I'm still floating...
(No, I wouldn't normally let a baby sleep in this position on a fluffy blanket. I had put her down for a moment while I was making the bed. When I turned to lift her over, she had stuck her hand under her cheek & I just thought it looked so cute, so I snapped a picture.)

Chocolate Fishies

Yes, I decided to rename my blog. The web address will remain the same for now. The logo was very skillfully created by Stella over at the golden adventures of a very dark horse... and her baby. I just love it. Go check out her wonderful creations here! I just love the new look. And if you look closely you will see why I had to wait until after Nuriel was born to put it up!

I can't take my eyes off of her or stop holding her. She smells so good. There came a point last night when I realized that I had been without sleep for 24 hours, 12 of which were spent in labor & I was not tired. I was so wired, it was crazy! I will type up the birth story sometime soon. It was *not* an easy birth, but so beautiful. She looks nothing like me. She's all Brent. She sleeps with her mouth wide open - just like he did. She's pooping up a storm - just like... never mind. She has huge feet. I tried to put size 6 months booties on her & they are small. She is so alert & awake - it's unbelievable... Back to looking at her some more...

Birth Announcement!

Nuriel Bradi was born at 11:32 a.m. this morning at home after 12 hours of labor. She decided to come without Mama having had that cocktail... She's just so precious. I'm so in love. And she looks just like her Papa!

First pout at about a minute out of the womb...

... and later not happy about "getting measured" & such.
21" & 9 pounds on the dot!

Congrats to emerson-j & Wabi-Sabi-Wanderings for being right on with the birthweight. Yeah. She's a girl. I was so surprised to see that when I looked a few minutes after she'd been placed on my chest! Off to rest & enjoy my baby.

Thank you, Brent, my love. What a precious gift. I love you!

Eviction Time!

"It's time to serve the eviction notice," is what my midwife said today before "massaging" my membranes. I'm on a few homeopathics til tomorrow & then I get to have "the cocktail." I can certainly feel' somethin' starting to happen... I never thought I'd be looking forward to a glass of what I understand to be mostly castor oil, an almond something & champagne. The latter probably making it sound more appealing than it is...

Christchurch Earthquake

If you are a reader from Christchurch, New Zealand, would you kindly e-mail me privately at chocolatelilies [at] gmail [dot] com? I'm trying to figure out the best way to help & I'm wondering about the state of a specific part of the city... Thanks!

I'm surprised that we don't hear more about this here in the U.S. The damage is just horrible...

Intentionally Left Blank

Life certainly feels like a roller coaster ride these past few days. Today started with me trying to help both children with getting ready for a camping/sailing trip early next week. Suddenly Nathan complained that he wasn't feeling well... He's been asleep with a fever for a few hours now. Not good.

I've thus decided to take a break from blogging for the time being. Enjoy your weekend.

The Day After

Yesterday I lost it & today I had an Epiphany. I was so stressed out by the "still pregnant" remarks & the thought of having "lost" a week of maternity leave (less time with Lil' Bean when he does arrive) that I was losing sight of something. I was losing sight of the fact that I always wanted to have another child; that it is likely that this is the last child I will give birth to; that Brent left me a most wonderful gift; that I should enjoy every day of this marvelous pregnant goddess belly. And so today I put on my Blessingway necklace & the bear necklace and I walked out into the world with a smile on my face. And I greeted the, "What? Still no baby?" remarks with, "Isn't it awesome that I get to enjoy being pregnant a little longer?" Yeah, isn't it awesome?

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Ughhh! Arghhhh!

I'm just so freakin' mad right now. Here goes my first week of maternity leave & still no baby. I'm sick & tired of all these false starts that are getting my hopes up and then nothing. I'm tired of hearing, "You're STILL pregnant? Is that baby ever going to come out?" At this point I'm so angry I just wanna say, "Yeah one day and I hope the first thing he'll do is give you a kick in the rear end." Seriously. If you see me twice a day, do you have to point out the fact that I'm STILL pregnant every time? As if I haven't noticed! And don't tell me that I look like I'm having twins either. I don't want to know that you had a 3-pounds baby. A 3-pounds baby isn't my ideal. Chances are I'm not having a 3-pounds baby because I wasn't smoking what you're smoking.

I'm all for spirituality. Yes, I still hold on to my truths. But the fact that he's here in spirit just isn't the same. Surely he must see how desperate I am at this point, but he's not doing a thing about it. And then I wonder why. Maybe he just thinks I'm unfit to raise his child or something. I turned around his smiling picture on the mantle today - right after my screaming fit about how unfair it all is, which in turn was right after I looked at it & had to cry because I miss him so much.

So, there you go. I'm a mess. Consider yourself lucky if you get to read this. Chances are I'll wake up in the morning, wonder why I let myself blog being a mess like this, and then end up deleting the post.

Happy 12th Birthday!

My youngest is twelve today. Time flies. Seems like yesterday that he was ten, then eleven. Oh, wait! He *was* eleven just a few hours ago! His gifts include a Lego set, a cookbook & two packs of organic bacon. He always complains that we don't have bacon & eggs often enough on Sunday mornings. (Bunting courtesy of Kelly.)

I can't wait to see his face when he unwraps the bacon. I have a feeling it will look something like this! (I will blog about the beautiful quilt in the background there soon.) What a silly, lovely boy! Happy Birthday!

Midwife Tuesday

Two posts today. The other one is here. Lil' Bean is doing fine. Strong heartbeat & he's active. Cervix is at 3-4 cm, 50% effaced, soft & squishy. No labor yet. If he hasn't made an appearance by next Monday, "the drink" will help him along. Tomorrow is Nathan's birthday. Wouldn't a birth on that day be a fun coincidence?

Noah & Nathan came with me. They wanted to meet the squirrel babies I mentioned here. They loved Noah's warm hands so much that one of them had a bowel movement. Aren't they cute?

First Day Of School

Voila! Noah and Nathan on their first day of 8th & 5th grade. My boys. They are amazing people. I just love them so much. They actually both got up at 6 a.m. joyfully; cheerfully. Let's hope each & every day this school year will be like that...
The school-cone is a German tradition for the first day of first grade. When Noah started first grade, he had a big one. Nathan, in Kindergarten at the time, had a small one. Nathan never had one for first grade (long story), so this year I decided to make the first day of school special. I surprised them with a school-cone. Nathan got the big one... a couple of years late & Noah has the lil' one as an 8th grader.

The i-tunes gift card is not part of that German tradition. Ha. As my children are getting older, I'm realizing that I need to loosen the chains a bit. He's almost 14... For some reason this is the first year ever that we are jumping on the new clothing, backpack, lunchbox... first day of school wagon (out of necessity, really). It's a very American thing we've never done.

Well, I better go & get ready before we're late on the first day because I'm blogging.

Edited to add: Just before we were leaving, Nathan said to Noah, "Why did you put your i-tunes gift card into the trash?" Noah says, "What? It's a real gift card? I thought Mom was tricking me with a fake advertisement." Oh my! :-)

Strap Me To A Pole?!

I just read, "The Pilgrims would stand women whose babies were late against a pole, strap them to it, and pound the pole up and down against the ground - apparently hoping to shake the baby loose."

Those Pilgrims, huh?

Yeah. I think I'd rather just wait!

Yes. I'm still waiting patiently. Labor Day Monday - you are my hope! You see, with school starting on Tuesday & Nathan's birthday on Wednesday, things are bound to get a bit tricky. I might ask to be strapped to a pole soon. Stay tuned.

PMSing & Labor

Confused, huh?

I'd love nothing more than some labor this Labor Day weekend & a smooth birth & a healthy baby. Yeah, take that all you lazy loafers who just wanna have fun & BBQ one more time! It's Labor Day, not Lazy Day! I'm willing to sweat in the birthing tub while you splash in the cool water by the pool, checking out the hot dudes & chicks. (Can't you tell by my vocabulary that I have a teenager in the house?)

Seriously, I know it's all about the right time, but can this please just be the right time?

Yes, patience is not my virtue & I'm not even PMSing, which leads me to the last time I should have been, but apparently wasn't aka the beginnings of Lil' Bean The Procrastinator. (Yes, it's an official name change in case you're wondering.)

And yes, I've been browsing old e-mail threads again. This one was preceded by a not-so-nice message from me when Brent didn't respond to an e-mail quickly enough (aka a few minutes). I blamed it all on PMSing. (Aren't we women so lucky to have this excuse for bad behavior once a month?) I'm not going to post my original message here, of course. Why not? - Because it's my blog & I want you to think I'm always nice, centered & calm. Ha!

I have a very busy week in preparation for my travel. Christmas presents to buy. Arrange shipping. Clothes to launder. Inoculations to have, especially the anti PMS inoculation.

I hear the anti-PMS inoculation is given in the rear end; extra long needle. Ouch. Enjoy!

Eight Months

It's hard to believe it's been eight months. On January 2nd, Brent and I said our good-byes in a hotel parking lot in New York City.

His were silver, mine were gold. So corny. Fun times.
Exquisite subway station tile in the back. Ha.

We had spent New Year's Eve & Day there. We didn't "get in" to the Times Square festivities. Too many people. We sat in Central Park together on a park bench; snow falling; drinking hot tea & coffee. Well, I got to sit on his warm winter coat, he sat on the park bench. He'd point that out, I'm sure. We got back to the hotel by 11:45 p.m. and watched the Times Square countdown on television, glad that we were warm & cozy in bed. We laughed about it as a sign of getting (or being) old. 2010 had thus started with much joy & love. Surely a great year was ahead with news of a baby on the way followed by a fabulous New Year's Eve together. Little did I know that just three weeks later my world would fall apart.

I'll take you back to that hotel parking lot in a minute, but first this: I was always the one taking the pictures on our trips. Brent liked how the photos turned out, but he also knew that I had a tendency to delete freely, especially when it involved pictures of me. We generally uploaded them from the camera directly to both of our laptops, but we hadn't done that with the NYC pictures. I actually ended up e-mailing them to him in batches of five due to the large file size - all of them, well almost. Seven were apparently missing. And I got caught in the act.

Hi Baby. Just going through the pics from NYC. Thank you for your effort in sending them. The following appear absent. [He lists them by individual file number. Funny. Wonder how long that took.] Just wondering if you have them.

I have them, but I don't like them.

So it is censorship. What about the mural pics? And there are no pictures of you.

Okay, back to the parking lot. I was driving back to Richmond. Brent was planning on taking a shuttle to JFK to fly back to New Zealand later that afternoon. Yeap, one of those crazy long trips where they write your luggage tag by hand, because their computer system can't process more than two connections with different carriers.

We had said good-bye & Brent had gone back upstairs. It was cold. I sat in the car with the engine running & I just couldn't leave. When we were saying good-bye for the first time (a few months earlier at the airport in Richmond), Brent had told me that he didn't want me to look back; that he wouldn't look back. He wanted me to remember a smile on his face and he knew he would have tears in his eyes. So, I didn't look back. But then he called me from a layover destination & asked me why I hadn't looked back. I said, "You told me not to. How do you know I didn't look back? You must have looked back..." He said, "Of course I did. I wasn't going to miss an opportunity to look at your bum without you noticing what I was doing." Arghhh. Men! :-)

I sat there in NYC in the car & cried. I hated saying good-bye & these early pregnancy hormones were probably not working in my favor either. I knew that if I didn't leave then & there, I wouldn't get back to Richmond before late in the night & I hate driving in the night. But my emotional self won. I turned the engine off & went back upstairs.

I had an emotional meltdown in the hotel room. We spent some more time together. I felt better about leaving after that, but it was still hard. There was a fear in me that I wouldn't see him again. I knew it was crazy & irrational to have such a thought. I remember saying, "I don't think I will see you again." He looked at me like I was crazy. "Don't be silly. Of course we'll see each other again," is what he said.

I'm glad I did it. I'd take the stuck in traffic option & getting home late in the night again any day. Had I known then what I know now, I would have actually never left; I wouldn't have let him go. We never did see each other again & we never will. He died less than three weeks later. But eight months ago today we said good-bye.

Good-bye, my love. Thanks for everything, especially for that most special gift of all...
